Canada’s biggest car makers reported mixed February sales as worries of a war in the Middle East and a slowing Canadian economy steered consumers from the showrooms, Reuters reported.

According to the news agency, General Motors of Canada said sales of cars and light trucks fell 8.7% to 26,516 vehicles in February from 29,040 in the same month a year earlier.

Car sales slipped 13.3% to 12,478 from 14,386. Truck sales, which include minivans and sport utility vehicles, dropped 4.2% to 14,038 from 14,654, Reuters said.

DaimlerChrysler Canada reported a 5.2% decline in February’s total vehicle sales of 15,887 from 16,763 in the same time last year, according to Reuters.

Light truck sales fell 14.2% to 11,333 from 13,212, but passenger car sales surged 28.2% to 4,554 from 3,551 last February, Reuters said.

Reuters reported that Ford said total vehicle sales in February edged up 0.8%, helped by a 1.1% increase in light truck sales.

Ford said total vehicle sales were 17,437, up from 17,304. Truck sales rose to 12,333 from 12,201. Car sales were flat at 5,104, compared with 5,103 last February, Reuters said.
