Vehicle sales in Canada slipped 0.7% in March, although this was the fourth straight month of decline.

However, industry data showed new vehicle sales came close to matching record-setting numbers from last year.

Ford was at number one thanks to strong demand for its pick-up trucks, while Chrysler took second spot with a 6.5% increase in sales. General Motors fell nearly 11% while Asian automakers also suffered with Toyota down 6.2%, Honda down 0.6% and Hyundai falling 4.7%.

Total March sales in Canada slipped to 156,680 vehicles from a record 157,749 in the same period last year. Car sales fell 4.7% to 70,2017, while truck sales rose 2.8% to 86,473.

European luxury brands gained sales and market share in the month, including a 33.5% jump for Porsche sales and a 26.6% increase in Land Rover sales.

Ford Canada said March sales rose to 25,092 vehicles from 24,690 in the same period last year, as a 2.8% gain in truck sales offset a 1.8% fall in car sales.

Chrysler sales rose to 24,173 vehicles from 22,703 in March last year with cars up 20% and truck sales increasing 3.2%. Year-to-date, Chrysler sales are up 4%. GM sales dropped from 22,684 a year ago to 20,218.
