Magna Steyr’s roof systems group (CTS) is producing the structurally innovative soft-top convertible system for the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet – recently launched in North America.

The Murano soft top is the result of international collaboration within Magna Steyr, which used global design, engineering and manufacturing teams at three locations. The roof system was designed and developed by a project team in North America, with production of the textile roof cover in Toluca, Mexico and final assembly in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

The CrossCabriolet is the first SUV with a soft top. The roof surface of more than three sq m, is one of the largest soft tops produced by Magna Steyr and this is its third roof contract for Nissan, in addition to the Nissan 370Z roadster and the Infiniti G37 convertible.

To equip an SUV with a convertible soft top, Magna Steyr for the first time integrated structural/kinematic parts directly into the soft-top headliner. The fabric cover was designed with an additional glass area above the backlite, which serves safety and design functions. In case of a rollover accident, integrated roll bars extend automatically and break through the glass area to provide increased safety for occupants in the rear seats. The glass area as a design element supports the translucent interior appearance by allowing additional light into the vehicle.
