After a poor showing in May, overall light duty vehicle sales in Canada for June rebounded to 164,796 units, up 6.6% year on year, resulting in first half sales 2.7% above 2010 first half sales.
For members of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC, representing import brands), June sales of 80,068 were 1.7% better than June 2010 sales, however, overall sales for AIAMC members for the first half of 2011 fell to 421,707, down almost 1% from first half sales in 2010.
Overall truck sales rose 7% over June 2010 resulting in truck sales of 87,966. The truck share of the overall market was 53.4% increasing slightly over last June’s share (53.2%).
For AIAMC members, truck sales were up 0.4% in June to 26,575. Trucks represented a 33.2% share of total AIAMC member sales, slightly lower than the 33.5% share of sales last June.
“While many of the inventory issues associated with the March tsunami in Japan were resolved in June, sales for AIAMC members were impacted nonetheless with new and aggressive incentives in the marketplace capturing sales for those manufacturers offering them,” said AIAMC president David Adams.
“Despite the highly competitive market in June, 11 of the 16 AIAMC member companies had increased sales and for most of those members the sales increases were in double digits compared to last year.
