Though its US sales for March and the first quarter of 2002 were both down around 11 percent, there was better news for Ford in Canada last month as car sales increased 4.2 percent to 7,999 units, compared with March 2001.
However, truck sales dropped 9.7 per cent to 16,309 units.
Better news came in the first quarter analysis where Ford of Canada’s total sales were up 6.4 per cent thanks to a 7.3 per cent jump in car sales and a six per cent increase in truck sales.
Along with some other US-owned vehicle makers, Ford Canada has recently been embroiled in a dispute with its dealers over sales of cheaper Canadian-specification cars to US buyers who cross the border to buy.
The company has threatened to cut off Thunderbird supplies from dealers who sell the sought-after, limited-production retro-look convertible to US buyers.
