According to the report, the Toronto firm of Rochon Genova has filed the suit on behalf of Canadians injured in accidents involving Ford Explorers and Firestone tyres.

The website report said that Michelle Rambharos of Brampton, Ontario, injured when one of the Firestone tyres on her 1995 Explorer ruptured and caused a rollover, launched the suit.

Bridgestone/Firestone recalled 250,000 tyres in Canada after 6.5 million tyres were recalled in the United States when they were reportedly linked to accidents in which more than 140 people died, the Canadian Press said. Under certain conditions, tyres reportedly disintegrated, leading to accidents, many of them rollovers.

“We allege that Ford and Firestone knew for years that their products were unsafe, and that they failed to take action to protect Canadians. We want to know what these executives knew, and when,” Joel Rochon, one of Rambharos’ lawyers, told the Canadian Press.

The report, citing lawyer David Zarek, added that the lawsuit also wants to expand the recall of Firestone tyres and help owners who may be affected financially if the resale value of their Ford Explorers has been reduced because of the reported problems with the vehicles.
