Canada’s minister in charge of the motor industry will meet with top US officials in Washington next week to assess progress on General Motors’ restructuring plans, he said on Tuesday.

“All I can tell you is we’re working with the Obama administration and with our Ontario [provincial government] counterparts. I will be in Washington later on next week to see how our progress is going,” industry minister Tony Clement told Reuters when asked if a GM bankruptcy was likely.

“I’ll be meeting with US Treasury officials who are on the case and obviously we’ll take stock of the situation on or before 31 May,” he added.
