Jürgen Schrempp, chairman of DaimlerChrysler, will leave the company after 44 years at the end of 2005. Dieter Zetsche, head of the Chrysler group, will become chairman from January 1 for five years.


Tom LaSorda, the present chief operating officer will head the division from January 1, 2006. He has also been appointed a full member of the board with immediate effect.


Eric Ridenour is promoted to COO of Chrysler, replacing LaSorda, for three years. He also joins the board.


“The supervisory board and Professor Schrempp are in full agreement that the end of the year 2005 is the optimal time for a change in the leadership of the company,” said Hilmar Kopper, chairman of the board. “The decisions of the supervisory board have been made unanimously after a thorough process.”


“(Schrempp) has left voluntarily after a dialogue with the supervisory board,” a spokesman told Automotive News on Thursday, adding that Schrempp had proposed Zetsche as his successor.
