Following a successful experience with the critically acclaimed 2.7 litre V6 CGI diesel engine, Ford has confirmed that it awarded the Tupy foundry of Brazil, and the Swedish Compacted Graphite Iron process control specialist SinterCast, the production contract for the CGI cylinder block of its new UK-built V8 diesel engine.

A claimed industry first, the CGI cylinder block is fully machined at the Tupy facilities in Brazil before being shipped to Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre in east London for engine assembly.
The 270 horsepower 640 Nm torque engine will be available in various Ford group vehicles during 2006. Initial volumes of the Euro 4-compliant engine are expected to be around 25,000 units per year with potential future applications in both Europe and North America.

“Together with the 2.7 litre V6 available in Jaguar, Land Rover and PSA Peugeot-Citroën vehicles, and the Ford of Turkey 7.3 litre commercial vehicle engine, the V8 programme represents a combined production potential of over 300,000 engine equivalents per year.”
Located in Joinville in southern Brazil, Tupy has 7,500 employees and a production capacity of 470,000 tonnes per year of cast iron components in its two manufacturing facilities located in Joinville, State of Santa Catarina and Mauá, State of São Paulo. Its main customers are Cummins, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen, Audi, Perkins, Mack Trucks, Wuxi Diesel, Iveco, Kubota, John Deere, Bosch, Ambrake, and Peugeot.
SinterCast claims to be is the world’s leading supplier of on-line process control technology for the reliable high volume production of CGI and its production agreements cover 29 foundries in 14 countries, accounting for 45% of the world production capacity for cast iron cylinder blocks and heads.
SinterCast’s foundry customers also produce a variety of other automotive and non-automotive components, with casting weights ranging from 4 kg to 17 tonnes.
