Bosch is to set up an ABS system assembly line in Brazil.

The unit will be in the company’s plant in Campinas city, São Paulo state, home to its chassis systems brakes division.

Bosch will invest about $US12m to produce ABS systems in Brazil. Production will start in 2007 and the Brazilian-made components will supply automakers in the Mercosur region, replacing parts imported from Europe. The plant will have the capacity to produce about 250,000 units per year.

According to Bosch the decision to produce ABS in Brazil relects increasing demand in the region. Between 2002 and 2005, the proportion of vehicles made in Mercosur countries equipped with ABS rose from 7% to 12% of annual total production.

This is in contrast to the EU where fitment is now mandatory.
