BorgWarner has secured a contract with a “major OEM” to supply high voltage inverters for battery electric vehicle (BEV) platforms, including passenger cars and trucks.

The contract is the supplier’s largest for silicon carbide based (SiC) inverters and the first for such components in North America.

“This is a significant business win, furthering our long-standing relationship with our customer,” said Stefan Demmerle, head of the supplier’s PowerDrive Systems.

The inverters use the Viper family of scalable power modules, manufactured with SiC materials for claimed superior efficiency. These allow for a higher voltage operation and higher current density compared with traditional inverter technology.

BorgWarner’s inverter performance and scalability, cost, size optimization and global manufacturing footprint contributed to securing the business win. The launch of the inverter is slated for 2024.
