BMW's English luxury car unit Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said it was recruiting a record number of candidates for its 2016 apprenticeship programme.

Seventeen places are available, the highest number of annual apprenticeships since the programme launched in 2006.

The apprenticeship programme provides people aged 16-24 with the opportunity to train with the Goodwood-based 'super-luxury' carmaker. The apprenticeships last for up to four years and combine on-the-job training with classroom-based studying for nationally recognised qualifications. The programme has been designed in conjunction with several local colleges.

Successful applicants will join the company in August 2016, working alongside skilled crafts people in leather, wood, paint, engineering and assembly roles. Over 100 people have joined the programme since its inception, with half currently in active apprenticeships at the factory and the remainder now employed by the company.

R-R CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said: "We are committed to developing future talent at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and I am especially pleased that we will welcome a record number of new apprentices to the business in 2016."

In addition to the apprentice scheme, around 50 university students were employed in 2015 on industrial placements ranging in duration from six to 12 months, and positions for 2016 are currently open. The company also runs a successful graduate programme, with new positions made available each year.
