BMW has announced the X7 Pick-up, stressing that this is a one-off prototype created by trainees in Munich for its Motorrad division.
Twelve trainees from the occupational sectors body and vehicle mechanics (m/f/x), vehicle mechatronics (m/f/x) and technical model construction (m/f/x) created the X7 Pick-up in ten months. They were given a test car which would otherwise have been scrapped. BMW terms the result a “fully functional, road-legal automobile in show car quality”.
CFRP was used for the rear doors and tailgate which, along with the loss of so much glass, mean a claimed weight reduction of 200kg despite a body which is 10cm longer than an X7’s.
The loadbay, which can accommodate cargo up to two metres long, is inlaid with polished teak trim. With the tailgate closed, the length is 140 centimetres.
BMW AG notes that close to 5,000 people in nine countries are involved in its training programmes.
