“The Auto Shanghai show is the ideal setting for the presentation of our latest system innovation, the Benteler Electric Drive System,” says Laurent Favre, CEO Benteler Automotive. “China has set itself ambitious goals in the electric mobility sector. These ambitions are perfectly in line with our new chassis system, which marks the next step toward more sustainable mobility solutions.”

As the world’s single largest automotive market, China plays an essential part in the company’s global production network. With currently eleven operating plants and additional joint venture locations, Benteler is already a well-established and reliable business partner for customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

Laurent Favre adds: “We intend to strengthen this commitment by generating up to 30% of our annual global turnover in China by 2025. The announcement of the Benteler Electric Drive System is a powerful symbol for this development, as well as for our outstanding collaboration with our local partners.” Hubertus Prinzler, vice president Research & Development Benteler Automotive, elaborates on the benefits of the electrified chassis system: “The Benteler Electric Drive System chassis combines our various competencies perfectly into one complete solution which we will be offering our customers as a service from a single source. This way, customers will save several years of development time and this will enable them to accelerate their growth.”

The system will offer a new level of functional flexibility, while at the same time accounting for emission reductions, lightweight construction and the highest safety standards. It will include modules and components such as the battery storage system, the electrified front and the rear axles as well as the crash management and suspension systems, which are scalable for numerous vehicle segments. This way, the Benteler Electric Drive System will create improved synergies with adjacent elements and a more efficient vehicle architecture. With the company’s experience in module assembly, different electric motor types will be integrated according to customers’ requirements.

Tony Shi, executive vice president Benteler Automotive Asia/Pacific, underscores the significance of the company’s system innovation for the Asia-Pacific region: “Unveiling the Benteler Electric Drive System at the Auto Shanghai exhibition is yet another milestone for Benteler Automotive in China. The Chinese market has always played a highly important role in our global strategy. Our customers benefit from our global technical know-how, which we implement locally in China.”

The company opened its first plant in Shanghai with its partner Shanghai Huizhong Automotive (SHAC) in 2002 and is continually extending its local footprint with production plants and joint ventures in each of the regional clusters in which key customers operate. Recently, Benteler signed an extension to its partnership with Shanghai Huizhong Automotive (SHAC).

Tony Shi continues: “We are striving to increase the number of our local suppliers in order to support our steady growth in the region. We also focus on enlarging our engineering staff to boost local Research and Development activities and respond to market trends more quickly. All of this enables us to build strong business relations with our partners and customers in China.”
