Belgian newspapers have reported that Verhofstadt is hoping the cars will be built from 2009, thus saving some of the jobs that will be lost when Golf production is transferred to Germany.

De Standaard newspaper has reported that over 2,000 employees at the plant faced with redundancy have been offered jobs at other companies. Around 4,000 jobs out of a total of 5,40 jobs are currently threatened.

Annual production volumes of the A1 model could be 70,000 to 100,000 units. Current Golf capacity in Brussels is around 250,000 units.
