The Volvo Car plant in Ghent, Belgium, produced a record high 258,479 vehicles in 2005, compared to 246,077 vehicles in 2004.

The Ghent plant accounted for some 60% of the total Volvo output, making 72,400 units of the Volvo S40 model, 61,800 units of the Volvo S60 passenger cars and some 82,100 units of the Volvo V50. Volvo S70 represented the rest of the Ghent plant output.

The USA remained the most important market for the plant’s output accounting for some 23% of the sales. Some 64% of production was sold on the European market.

The plant reduced its workforce to 5,025 in 2005, from 5,300 the previous year. Volvo also said that it invested some EUR42m to prepare for the production of Volvo C30, which will start at the end of 2006.
