Toyota Motor Europe (TME) sold 278,680 vehicles in the period from January to March 2006, an increase of 4% over the same period in 2005.


TME’s overall market share for the first three months was flat at 5.5%.


In a statement Toyota said that TME also achieved absolute record monthly sales in March with 124,360 units (+12% compared to March 2005), with a market share that was up 0.3 percentage points to 5.7%.


Lexus recorded the highest growth with three-month sales rose 118% to 12,543 units, with an absolute record 6,045 units sold during the month of March (+69%). This was due to strong sales of new models – the IS250, IS220d and RX400h.


The Toyota brand set an absolute monthly record in March supported by sales of the RAV4, up 58% on a year earlier to 17,795, and the Aygo with sales of 10,140 units. Yaris sales were up also up 1% to 27,434 units. Finally the Prius achieved a monthly record in March with sales of 2,110 units.

In the three-month period, Toyota produced 174,721 cars, 224,499 engines and 148,443 transmissions at its plants in the UK, France, Turkey, Poland and the Czech Republic.


For 2006, Toyota has set the European target of exceeding one million units in Toyota brand sales and 45,000 units in Lexus brand sales. Operating at record capacity, Toyota aims to produce 806,000 cars, 860,000 engines and 575,000 transmissions in 2006.
