Toyota Motor Europe (TME) sales totalled 451,802 units in the first half of the year, up 9.4 % year-on-year.
Toyota said that its sales growth compares with market growth of 3.0% and that the positive performance for the group was helped by strong hybrid sales (up 20% on last year). Sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid models in Europe reached 90,290 units during the first half, accounting for one fifth of the total sales.
Toyota said the Toyota Auris Hybrid Touring Sports performed particularly well with sales reaching 18,739 units, representing 25% of the total Auris range sales.
Daniele Schillaci, Senior Vice-President for Sales and Marketing, said the second quarter performance was in line with plans. “We performed much better than the market since the beginning of the year with a particular strong performance in Western Europe. We are confident that the launch of the new generation Aygo this summer will excite customers and consolidate our first-half gains.”
Last month, TME chief Didier Leroy told a conference in Brussels that he would like to see Toyota return to selling over 1m units a year in Europe. “With nine factories in seven countries, with those kinds of roots, we cannot be doing less,” Leroy said. “But, this will be one million profitable sales,” he maintained. “We will not chase a volume number.”
