Toyota Motor Europe sold 516,499 units in the period from January to June 2005, an increase of 3% over the first half of 2004, in an overall market down 1%.


Market share for the first half was up 0.1% to 5.2%. Toyota achieved record monthly sales in June with 94,466 units, up 18% compared to June 2004. June market share was up 0.6% to 5%. While Lexus first half sales were down slightly at 13,304 units (-1%), the luxury brand enjoyed record sales in April and May, culminating in record June sales of 2,758 units (+23% compared to June 2004).


In the first half, Toyota produced 314,877 cars, 278,183 engines and 131,343 transmissions at its plants in the UK, France, Turkey, Poland and the Czech Republic. It aims to produce 606,000 vehicles, 511,000 engines and 306,000 transmissions in Europe in 2005.


“Our strong first half results make us confident we will reach our sales target of 980,000 units in Europe this year, and meet our production targets,” said Shinichi Sasaki, president and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor Europe and Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing Europe.


Total sales of the Corolla (114,235 units) rose 10% in the January-June period, compared to the same period the previous year. Corolla Verso sales jumped 89% to 49,976 units, while Land Cruiser sales increased 14% to 25,143 units. Sales of the hybrid Prius rose by 172% to 9,374 units.

For the first six months, the UK was Toyota’s largest national market in Europe, with 73,865 units sold (unchanged from the same period last year), followed by Italy (71,705 units; -5%), Germany (68,361 units; +8%) and France (46,891 units; +14%). Toyota sales in Spain, the fifth largest Toyota market in Europe, grew 10% to 32,469 units.


In addition to setting a monthly sales record in June, Toyota also achieved a monthly record for the Yaris (23,076 units; +20% compared to June 2004); Corolla (20,808 units, +45%); Corolla Verso (8,860 units; +28%); RAV4 (9,831 units; +9%); Land Cruiser (4,172 units; +21%) and Prius (1,612 units; +266%). The Lexus GS also achieved a monthly sales record in June, with 598 units sold (+987%).
