Toyota Motor Marketing Europe (TMME) said it sold an all-time record 435,770 units in the period from January to June 2003, an increase of 6% over the first half of 2002.


The brand’s European market share for the first half reached 4.7%, up from 4.5% last year, setting a claimed new record.


Toyota also claimed a record monthly result in Europe with sales of 81,269 units in June – an increase of 18% over the same month last year.


Manufacturing operations in the UK, France, Turkey and Poland produced 222,720 cars, 210,824 engines and 59,769 trans-missions in the first half of 2003.


Toyota remains on track toward its “2003 sales target of 790,000 vehicles,” TMME head Takis Athanasopoulossaid in a statement.

Total sales of the Corolla (94,931 units) and Corolla Verso models (26,010) rose 19% in the first half, compared to the same period the previous year. Sales of the RAV4 SUV model rose 17% in the first half, to 57,542 units, while the recently redesigned Land Cruiser saw a 107% boost 19,614 units sold. Sales of the redesigned Lexus RX300 luxury SUV reached 5,802 units in its first two months of sale (May-June), up 557% from 1,042 units for the same period last year.


Italy remained Toyota’s largest market in Europe, with 71,641 units sold in the first half (+6%), followed by the UK (69,999 units; +5%), Germany (53,283 units; +4%), France (36,530 units; +3%, ) and Spain (20,930 units; +22%). Poland enjoyed the most spectacular growth (+47%) for the first half, selling 18,100 units.
