Toyota Motor Europe boosted sales last year by 10% to 1,238,638 units, marking the automaker’s 11th consecutive year of growth there and the first year in which Russia was the largest individual market.


Toyota sales were up 10% to 1,184,828 while Lexus volume was up 7% to 53,810. Overall market share was 5.6%.


Around two-thirds of all vehicles sold in Europe, were built there and TME aims to grow sales by around 5% in 2008.


Russia was, for the first time, TME’s largest market in 2007 with 157,895 vehicles sold – up 55% year on year. It was followed by Italy (145,217; +5%) and the United Kingdom (144,538; +3%).


Strongest growth was recorded in Ukraine, up 108% to 13,627 vehicles sold.

Top-selling Toyota was the French-built Yaris, up 6% to 266,461 vehicles. Prius hybrid sales were up 41% to 32,171.


The IS was the top Lexus model but sales were off 1% to 21,625 vehicles. RX SUV sales rose 6% to 20,767. Hybrids accounted for 31% of Lexus sales, up 5%.


TME president and CEO Tadashi Arashima said: “2008 will be a more demanding year for Toyota and the automotive industry as a whole. Environmental technologies will continue to play a significant role in our model line-up, as we focus on improving the CO2 competitiveness of our vehicle range and increasing our hybrid volume mix.


“In 2008, we aim to grow total hybrid sales of Toyota and Lexus vehicles by more than 20%.”
