New registrations in western Europe of heavy trucks of 16 tonnes or more fell 29.5% in May to 15,264 units, automotive industry group Acea reportedly said on Tuesday.

Year to date sales of 120,997 were up 11.7%, however.

“This [May] drop is the logical follow-up of the spectacular increase of 83.5% in April 2006 caused by the entry into force of the legislation on digital tachographs on 1 May, 2006,” ACEA said, according to Reuters, adding: “The chaotic introduction of the new rules has pushed many operators to anticipate purchases, which has a disrupting effect on the market.”
