Workers at the Ford plant in Belgium, which builds the new D-segment Mondeo, have gone on strike, mostly over higher wage claims, and a mediator has been brought in, a union official was quoted as saying on Friday.

“The workers downed tools at around 5.30 yesterday afternoon. They are seeking a pay rise, fixed contracts for temporary employees and want the issue of work pressure addressed,” ACV-CSC union senior official Ludo Copermans told Reuters.

The report said the workers want a wage rise of EUR1 ($US1.47) an hour, along with an additional premium, and noted that the plant had been affected in the past week by strikes at suppliers, prompting the action at the plant itself.

Copermans reportedly said workers at other Ford Europe plants at Cologne and Saarlouis in Germany and Valencia in Spain were paying close attention to the Belgian action and eventual settlement.
