The European Union’s regulators are opening a probe into the state aid Germany is providing for BMW and Volkswagen.

The BMW aid involves an EUR46m grant towards an investment project of EUR368m at the company’s Leipzig plant aimed at the manufacture of electric cars.

In a statement, the European Commission said it understood “the importance of the project from the environmental and energy policy point of view,” but stressed it still needed “to assess it compliance with …EU provisions for large investment projects.”

The Volkswagen case involves a grant of EUR83.7m towards an EUR700 investment project at the company’s plant in Zwickau.

“The Commission has doubts whether Germany’s suggestions for the definition of the relevant market… can be accepted,” the regulator said.
