Between 2004 and 2010 Tata Motors-owned Jaguar and Land Rover sold 39,000 cars in China, last year it sold 42,000 and the numbers will continue to rise.
Bob Grace, president of JLR China, said it won’t be long before China, currently the company’s third largest market, overtakes the UK and the USA.
Latest addition to the range is the Range Rover Evoque which is already selling well.
Grace said: “There are a staggering 500m active daily internet users in China and we launched a sophisticated web marketing campaign for Evoque and quickly had 7,000 orders for the car.”
To keep pace with sales, JLR is opening dealers in the country at a rate of one a week. There are currently 89 in operation with more than 30 under development. The number will grow to 140 by 2014.
“This is also good news for UK PLC,” Grace said. “JLR now accounts for 20% of all the UK’s exports to China.”
