Ford showed off the production version of its new small EcoSport SUV, first seen at the Delhi show earlier this year.
The new model will be built in China at Ford’s factory in Chongqing. Asia Pacific chief Joe Hinrichs added that it will be sold worldwide.
“We have high expectations for this model, it’s an SUV that is the right size for cities and those who will buy it we see as urban adventurers.”
Ford has invested heavily in China and Asia Pacific – some $6.7bn down the years. Hinrichs added: “We are adding around 3,000 more jobs in the region over the next three years and China is now our largest manufacturing base outside of Detroit.”
The company also unveiled its new Explorer and the Kuga at the Beijing show. SUVs are gaining in popularity in China and Dave Schoch, head of Ford’s Chinese operations added: “The way the market is moving it’s important we have these types of vehicles and when we get Ecosport as well we will have a full range of SUVs.”
