Ten automotive OEMs have pledged to uphold ‘sustainability’ and ‘decent working conditions’ in their supply chains. The commitment comes as they drive forward with electrification programmes and battery component constituents which have raised question on the ethical sourcing of some materials.
BMW Group, Daimler AG, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Opel/ Vauxhall, Scania CV AB, Toyota Motor Europe, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group are the ten who have joined forces to launch ‘DRIVE Sustainability – The Automotive Partnership’.
The new partnership, facilitated by CSR Europe, aims to drive sustainability throughout the automotive supply chain by promoting a common approach within the industry and by integrating sustainability in the overall procurement process. In a statement, CSR Europe said, ‘it is of great importance to these 10 responsible automotive manufacturers that the people making vehicles, components, or providing services are afforded decent working conditions and are treated with dignity and respect, while minimising the environmental impact of their industry and promoting business integrity’.
The ‘Lead Partners’ of the initiative are BMW Group, Scania CV AB, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group. The Partners of the initiative are Daimler AG, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Opel/ Vauxhall, Toyota Motor Europe.
Stefan Crets, Executive Director of CSR Europe and facilitator of DRIVE Sustainability, said: “DRIVE Sustainability is a commitment from the automotive industry to move to the next level of sustainability and supply chain management. Sustainability is well established among the buying criteria of these companies, therefore it is now the time to strengthen the way they work together and establish a Partnership focused on results, based on stronger collaboration, excellence, leadership and impact. As a next step, in 2017 we will fine-tune our strategy and continue our activities, which include organising supplier trainings in Turkey, India, Spain, Hungary, Italy and others. “
