While Toyota and GM lock horns to be the biggest in unit sales globally, the Japanese automaker has scored a significant psychological victory in Australia, which was one of its first export markets.
Toyota Australia has, for the first time, outsold the combined totals of its two US-owned rivals, according to official industry sales results issued on Monday.
October sales for Toyota were a record 20,212 compared with the combined General Motors Holden and Ford total of 19,621.
“The result is double-edged,” said Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner.
“It has taken us almost 50 years to get to this position in the Australian market – and it is a great achievement for everyone involved with Toyota.
