Toyota Australia has opened its new corporate headquarters in Port Melbourne.
The three level building will accommodate around 340 people in 11,000 square metres of floor space on the original site where the original independent importer/assembler, Australian Motor Industries, began making Toyotas over 40 years ago. Toyota Japan later took over the company.
AMI began assembling the Tiara on the original Port Melbourne assembly line in 1963 and over two million Toyota vehicles have subsequently been built in Australia.
Toyota Australia now builds the Camry and Avalon at its fully integrated manufacturing plant in Altona in west Melbourne and last year made 113,614 vehicles.
The firm is Australia’s largest vehicle exporter and in 2003 exported 66,200 cars to over 20 different markets, supplying right and left hand drive Camry vehicles to the Middle East, New Zealand, South Africa and South Pacific markets.
