Toyota Australia has reported a net after-tax profit of $A54.9m for the period 1 April 2005 to 31 March 2006 on revenue of $7.6bn – down on the $70.8m profit posted for fiscal year 2004-05 when sales were $7.3bn.

Capital expenditure was $420.6m for 2006, compared with $176.8m in 2005.

This included costs associated with the consolidation of manufacturing operations located at Port Melbourne to the Altona car assembly plant and preparations to build the redesigned Camry from June 2006 and launch the V6 Aurion sedan version later this year.

Work included the upgrade of the press plant operations, a new global body line, new bumper bar and resin operations and the development of a logistics centre.

During the fiscal year, the Australian manufacturing operations at Altona in Victoria produced 113,316 Camry and Avalon vehicles for both domestic and export markets, compared to 105,866 the previous year. (Toyota sources left-hand drive Middle East market Camry models from its Australian unit.)

Domestic retail sales volume during the period was a record 214,072 vehicles (including Lexus but excluding Daihatsu). During calendar 2005, domestic sales in Australia reached 208,882.

Toyota Australia president Ted Okada said the imminent launch of two locally manufactured vehicles against a backdrop of relentless global and local competition, constantly evolving customer preferences and undiminished demands to achieve more with less resources means Toyota is entering one of the most important periods in its history.

“We achieved another year of record market sales and retained our position of market leadership,” Okada said.

“Customer preferences and other external factors have changed the mix of models with a very strong trend towards smaller vehicles.

“We expect the market to remain strong compared to recent record sales years, in spite of interest rate speculation and fuel prices.

“With the launch of the new model Camry supported by continuing export demand we are confident of improving our financial profit performance.”
