Toyota Australia is claiming an all-time local record for motor vehicle exports by any brand in a single month.
The automaker shipped 10,699 cars during August and expects to remain Australia’s number one vehicle exporter by shipping about 80,000 cars during 2006. Its previous best export result was 8,261 set in October 2001.
Last year Toyota Australia also set a new industry export record of 68,989 vehicles, worth $A1.3bn, the majority being left-hand-drive Camrys to the Middle East.
The local auto industry is the largest source of manufactured exports for Australia, earning more than $5bn in 2005.
The latest Camry, now the only four-cylinder car built in Australia, is destined for more than 20 export destinations, including New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, with the majority going to the Middle East.

“Overseas demand for the Australian-made Camry is running at record levels and has been buoyed by demand in both export and domestic markets.”
Toyota Australia’s export division has been working with the six member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) customers in preparation for today’s (1 September) launch of the Camry in the region.
The 2006 launch of the new Camry sedan will be followed in November by the launch of the Australian built six-cylinder Aurion sedan.
