Toyota Australia has announced a recall of around 300,000 models models as part of the global recall of 6.5m units announced on Wednesday.

The Australian recall list includes Aurion, Camry, Corolla, Kluger [Highlander], RAV4 and Yaris [Vitz] models built between August 2005 and August 2006 and January 2009 and December 2010.

"This recall is a precautionary measure and is due to the power window master switch potentially being manufactured with an insufficient amount of grease," the automaker said in a statement. "If insufficient grease was applied, under certain conditions the switch may develop a short circuit that can cause the switch assembly to overheat and melt. In the worst case, a melting switch can produce smoke and potentially lead to a fire.

"Toyota Australia is still assessing the impact on the Australian market, however it is expected that less than 300,000 vehicles will be involved. There have been no reported accidents or injuries in Australia."

The Australian unit acknowledged the latest recall follows a previous campaign in October 2012 relating to the power window master switch but said: "Motorists involved in the previous campaign will not be impacted by this recall".

Dealers will inspect the power window master switch circuit board and apply heat-resistant grease to the switch. If the switch is already demonstrating signs of malfunction, the circuit board will be replaced. The work should take about an hour.
