The Daihatsu Australia Pty. Ltd franchise throughout Australia has been formally taken over by Toyota Motor Corp. Australia Ltd, Toyota said Wednesday (5/7/00).

The move, coming after the announcement of the takeover back in February of this year, allows Toyota to strengthen the Daihatsu brand. Daihatsu will become a separate division of Toyota, and will continue to work with its current dealer and distribution network although not all Daihatsu dealers have agreed to join Toyota.

Daihatsu’s existing facilities in Riverwood will continue with its parts supplies operation before being relocated within two or three months to Toyota’s main warehouse in Woolooware Bay, Sydney.

According to a Toyota spokesman, some staff may be laid off, but there are no immediate plans to do this.
