The Toyota Corolla was Australia’s top selling car last month, with 3,894 sold as the overall market slipped 1.4% year on year to 96,924 as a second half slowdown continued.
The Mazda 3 was second most popular model (3,666), followed by the Toyota Hilux (3,368), Hyundai i30 (3,157) and GM Holden Commodore (3,097).
The top five highlighted the growing popularity of small cars with three falling within the segment (Corolla, Mazda3 and i30). November sales in this segment were up 5.7% year on year while year to date sales were up 6.6%.
Growth in the small SUV market also continued with sales up 32.9% and 22.7% year on year and year to date respectively.
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) chief executive Tony Weber said sales of passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles last month totalled 96,924, down 1.4% (or 1,423 vehicles) on November 2012. This was a result of a significant decline in sales in Queensland (down 9.8%) and Western Australia (down 15.9%).
Nationally; however, year to date sales were up 2.2% with 1,039,471 vehicles sold between January and November 2013.

By GlobalDataGovernment and business purchases continued to decrease last month, with sales down 9.2 and 5.2% (totalling 3,817 and 35,756), respectively, compared to November 2012.
Private sales grew 2.8% to total 49,406. Private sales of light commercials and SUVs, in particular, increased significantly, rising 36.1 and 19% (totalling 6,608 and 16,213), respectively, compared to November 2012.
Toyota held the top sales position in the November monthly market with 18,098 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 10,477, Hyundai with 8,530, Mazda with 8,399 and Ford with 7,914.
The Australian-made Holden Commodore, Toyota Camry and Holden Cruze were all in the top 10.
