MG has been officially relaunched in Australia with the MG6 sedan and fastback range shipped from SAIC in China.
GoAuto.co.au said the sole Australian importer is a company called Longwell Motor and both MG6 variants approved for the market have a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 118kW/215Nm and five-speed manual transmission.
MG’s first Australian dealership is on Parramatta Road in Petersham, Sydney from which Longwell also runs its importation operations.
Between six and eight additional MG dealerships across Australia are under consideration for opening this year with the total number of outlets to reach 20 by the end of 2014.
SAIC told GoAuto.co.au Longwell Motor is a private company with more than 15 years’ experience dealing with European brands including Audi, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Last February an SAIC manager told GoAuto Longwell was awarded sole Australian distributorship rights for MG because it “has many years experience in car dealerships, they have got passion for MG (and) they have a strategic long-term plan for Australian market”.
