General Motors’ Holden unit has launched the Cruze hatchback in Australia, billing it as ‘locally designed and built’.
Holden initially imported the Cruze sedan from GM Korea but then put an updated version – dubbed the Series II – into local production alongside its Commodore range at its plant in Elizabeth, South Australia.

The hatchback version was, Holden said, designed at its Port Melbourne studio for global sale. Holden’s versions have detail changes from the Chevrolet-badged models shipped from Korea to other markets – the hatch was launched recently in Korea and the UK.
The Australian Cruze hatchback is made with 1.4- and 1.8-litre petrol engines, a two-litre diesel and five or six-speed manual transmission as standard. A six-speed automatic is optional with all engines. The four trim levels include two ‘sports’ versions unique to Australia.
As with the locally made Cruze sedan, detail changes have been made to suit the Australian market, including suspension tuning.
