Australian car components supplier Ajax Engineered Fasteners was reported to have gone into liquidation after a meeting of its creditors, leaving 189 people unemployed.

According to The Australian newspaper’s website. workers had hoped the Melbourne-based company could be sold to an Indian based consortium but it will now be wound down after it was decided it was not viable in its current form.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) however remains hopeful the consortium, the Uma Group, will still purchase part of the company, providing jobs initially for up to 60 workers, the paper said.

“We are confident that the offer we received last night (Thursday) off the Indian company could get us over the line and, if it’s successful, allow us to resume some sort of operation after Christmas for about 60 people,” AWU Victorian state secretary Cesar Melham told The Australian.
