Mark Bernhard will return to Holden as chairman and managing director.

He started his auto industry career at Holden in 1986 and has since held various senior finance roles at other GM operations. The former Holden CFO is currently vice president and CFO of Shanghai GM.

General Motors’ international operations chief Stefan Jacoby said Bernhard background and experience was ideal for heading Holden.

“Knowledge of Holden, our region and GM’s global operations will serve him well in his new role,” he said.

“He will [oversee] the ongoing transition of Holden [from a local manufacturer] to a national sales company and the repositioning of the brand for long-term growth and profitability.”

Bernhard briefly visited Australia to speak with dealers and takes up his new role in the third quarter of 2015.  He replaces interim managing director and CFO Jeff Rolfs. Rolfs will stay on as finance chief.

Jacoby said Holden would launch 24 “major new” vehicles and 36 new powertrain combinations over the next five years.

“While I can’t reveal all the details, I can say that Holden will debut a [redesigned] Barina Spark in the first quarter of 2016, launch a global Captiva replacement and another [new model] to ensure comprehensive offerings in the crucial SUV market segment.”

So far, Holden has announced it will modify and rebadge a number of Opel models for sale in Australia. These include the next generation Insignia as a 2018 front drive replacement for the current locally made, rear drive Commodore which goes out of production in 2017.

Holden also currently imports some of its models from GM Korea.
