Volkswagen will invest EUR223m in its plant in Argentina to build a new pick-up from 2009.
According to news agency dpa, capacity will be around 100,000 units. A further 30,000 units will be assembled at Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle plant in Hannover Germany.
The model will compete with the Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200 and has been developed under the project name RPU (Robust Pick-Up). It has been designed mainly for emerging markets but will also be sold in Europe. It is unlikely to be sold in North America. Previous reports have speculated that the model could also be assembled in South Africa and China.
The Pacheco plant in Argentina currently produces the Caddy, Polo Classic and the Suran for the South American market.
In the 1990s VW had a short-lived deal with Toyota that saw the German automaker assemble the Japanese company’s Hilux in Germany for sale under both the VW and Toyota brands.
