A123 Systems has opened its new manufacturing facility in Ostrava, Czech Republic, with the site due to produce more than 600,000 units of its low voltage automotive systems annually for European customers.

Representatives from four unnamed European vehicle manufacturers also attended.

A123’s Ostrava location will allow for regional assembly of the company’s 12V Lithium-ion starter battery and next generation 48V battery.

The technology also provides the market with lead-free alternatives to conventional automotive batteries. Last month marked the first customer shipment from the new facility along with the installation of a second production line.

Later this year, A123 will begin production of its 48V programmes at the new facility.

A123 currently operates manufacturing facilities in China and the US. The Ostrava plant adds to the existing global footprint and addresses the increase in demand from the European market.
