The Chicago auto show is now underway to be followed by Geneva in a few weeks’ time, with New York and then Shanghai in April. Which are the key vehicles to note at these shows? just-auto’s new and future products editor, Glenn Brooks, provides a need-to-know summary.

Chicago is the launchpad for quite a few US-intended models, such as the next generation Honda Pilot. Kia is also showcasing an electronic 4×4 system for EVs with a concept based upon the Soul.

One of the main attractions at Geneva in early March will be Renault‘s fresh attempt at tackling the Qashqai segment. Its new Kadjar will be built in Spain and China and one surprise is that it supplements rather than replaces the Koleos. Alliance partner Infiniti will reveal its thinking for a compact SUV at Geneva but this will be based on a Daimler architecture. Use PLDB to see at a glance all the current and future models on this, the MFA platform.

The steady reinvention of Mitsubishi Motors as an SUV and PHEV specialist continues at the Swiss show, in the form of a preview of the next generation ASX (RVR or Outlander in some markets). Unlike the larger Outlander PHEV, the prototype on show will have a 2WD powertrain. At the opposite end of the performance and price range, Audi will reveal an e-tron version of the next R8.

After Switzerland, the global motor show circus returns to the US, and Cadillac has every intention of stealing the New York show. The CT6 sedan makes its global debut here in early April (and the CT6 PHEV too?) but Jaguar is hoping its second generation XF sedan will also grab lots of attention. Both these cars will be big for their intended segment(s) and shall each have a high aluminium content. TMS USA will give its Scion division a relaunch in New York with the iM as well as a new sedan, and will also reveal the next Lexus RX crossover.

This being an odd-numbered year, it’s Auto Shanghai in April rather than Beijing, which took place last year. Shanghai Auto has already garnered much publicity with its teasing of the first SUV for the MG brand. Another will follow, and PLDB has details of that model too. BYD is also expanding even further into the SUV market but its next additional model won’t be launched one of its maker’s signature PHEV or hybrid powertrains. Such a variant may come later, but initial data for the future BYD Song/S3 can be found here. The future Han and M3 models might also have their debuts at Auto Shanghai.
