This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed marked a quarter century of the event. The list of vehicle world premieres is published below.
Ariel Atom 4: 19 years on from the debut of the first model comes the fourth generation Atom. The 4 features a fresh tubular frame as well as new suspension, braking and steering systems as well as body panels. The tiny firm, which is still based in south west England, has fitted the car with the 320PS turbocharged 2.0-litre engine from the Civic Type R and claims the Atom 4 will reach 60mph in 2.8 seconds and 100mph in 6.8. Pricing starts at just under GBP40,000.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera: This short-term replacement for the Vanquish S is a 4,712mm long 2+2. It has carbon fibre body panels and is powered by a 5.2-litre biturbo V12. Outputs are claimed to be 725PS and 900Nm of torque. The top speed is quoted as 211mph and 0-62mph is said to take 3.4 seconds. The gearbox is a ZF eight-speed torque converter automatic. In time, there will likely be a new Vanquish, at a price above the DBS Superleggera.
Maserati Levante GTS: “The twin turbo V8 maintains the V900 architecture of the 3.8-litre unit fitted in the flagship Quattroporte GTS but has been re-engineered to work with the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive system and retuned to deliver 550hp (404kW) at 6,250 rpm and 730Nm peak torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. Like all Maserati petrol engines, this V8 is assembled by Ferrari in Maranello”. Top speed is claimed to be 292km/h with 0-100km/h taking a stated 4.2 seconds.
McLaren 600LT: compared to a 570S Coupé, the 600 Long Tail is 96kg lighter, has 25 per cent bespoke parts and is powered by a 600PS and 620Nm version of McLaren’s 3.8-litre biturbo V8. The bodywork has unique carbon fibre panels which make the LT 74mm longer than other Sports Series cars. This includes a special front splitter as well as bespoke side sills, an extended diffuser and a fixed rear wing. McLaren says it will produce the 600LT for 12 months commencing in October.
Nissan GT-R50 By ItalDesign: a striking new body on the chassis of an R35. The way the rear spoiler forms a rising panel is especially elegant and hopefully Nissan will use this idea for the R36 (see video). Nissan Motor says: “The first-ever collaboration between Nissan and Italdesign, the GT-R50 prototype shown at Goodwood could become the blueprint for an extremely limited run of hand-built production vehicles. The vehicle commemorates the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R, in 2019, and Italdesign, in 2018”. Footage of the GT-R50 is here.

Toyota Supra A90 prototype: six years have passed since TMC and BMW AG announced a collaboration for two sports cars and still there is no date for the Toyota’s debut in production form. By contrast, the Z4 will be revealed at Pebble Beach next month. TMS USA has just announced that the debut of the Supra in NXS (Nascar Xnfinity Series) will take place in February. The series production Supra seems likely to have its world debut at the Paris (October) or LA motor shows (November). Both cars will have a BMW platform and BMW in-line six-cylinder engines.
