Notably, the number of patent applications in the automotive industry was 109,821 in Q2 2024, versus 115,752 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 18% year-on-year and decrease 5% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to an 18% year-on-year decrease in patent grants and 5% decline in quarter-on-quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by Toyota Motor with 3,844, followed by Robert Bosch Stiftung with 2,931 and Hyundai Motor with 2,020.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 40% share of total patent filings
The largest share of patent filings in the automotive industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 40%, followed by the US (16%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by China was 1% lower than the 41% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
