Just days after announcing it would recall 1,000 laid-off workers for a third Chevrolet Impala shift at Oshawa in Canada, General Motors yesterday said it would recall another 1,000 workers this autumn to reinstate a third shift at a Pontiac heavy-duty pickup plant.
According to the Detroit News, GM chopped a third shift, about 1,000 jobs, at the plant in February 2001 as US car and truck sales slowed.

However, the newspaper reported that sales of GM’s heavy-duty pickups such as the Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are up 32 percent so far this year while overall demand for the company’s full-size pickups is up 11.7 percent in the first four months of 2002.
The Detroit News said that the Pontiac plant now employs 2,400 hourly and 215 salaried workers and the third shift will boost the plant’s annual output by 100,000 trucks to 300,000 vehicles.
GM has also scheduled overtime for next week at 14 car and light truck plants, the Detroit News added.
