Automotive components supplier Go Charge Go Asia (GCG Asia) announced it plans to expand into electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing to support plans to produce EVs in the region.

The company wants to produce the batteries in Malaysia in partnership with a leading global battery supplier to provide a “sustainable local supply” to automakers in south-east Asia.

GCG Asia is said to be in talks with potential partners and is looking to kick-start an EV battery manufacturing project in the second half of 2021.

The company’s founder and CEO Alice Tan said in a statement: “The automotive industry has a duty to ensure the sustainability of new innovative technologies, which is why it is necessary for GCG Asia to prepare for the introduction of such technologies into the Southeast Asian market.”

Malaysia, and south-east Asia as a whole, significantly lags most developed markets in the transition towards zero-emission vehicles.

EV sales in the region represent a negligible fraction of total vehicle sales.
