DaimlerChrysler expects to sell as many as 15% more cars in Asia next year as demand in China grows, Frank Messer, the German company’s president and chief executive officer for Southeast Asia said, according to a Detroit News wire report.

The report said Messer told reporters in the Indonesian resort island of Bali earlier this week that the company will sell 26,000 of its Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, about 3,000 Smart minicars, about 3,500 Chrysler brand vehicles and about 6,000 commercial vehicles, an increase of between 10 and 15%.
Rising demand from China and other markets is helping DaimlerChrysler and rival BMW sell more luxury cars in Asia, amid faltering sales in US and Europe, the report noted.
China is the world’s fastest-growing major car market, and luxury cars are forecast to make up a fifth of imports into the country in five years, the Detroit News said, citing industry consultant Automotive Resources Asia Ltd.
