The company says that diesel sales of its new Polo will almost double from 7.5 to 14 percent while 53 percent of this year’s Golfs will be diesel, an increase of almost a third on 2001’s share.

But VW adds that the largest increase in diesel market share will be in “family-oriented models” such as its Sharan minivan with 74 percent of sales predicted to be diesel. Eighty percent of Golf and Passat estates will also have diesel engines, the company forecast.

“Last year we were number two in the UK for diesel, this year, thanks to increased interest in diesels and, in particular, our own TDI PD engines, we intend to be number one,” said director Paul Willis.
