Mr Okuda told the newspaper that the possible closure of Mitsubishi Motor Australia’s (MMAL) manufacturing facility in Australia from 2005 onwards would cause difficulties for remaining carmakers in terms of higher costs. However, he reportedly said that Toyota would stay on anyway.

MMAL is involved in its own struggle to return to profit following massive losses caused, in part, by the former management ignoring tens of thousands of warranty claims in Japan.

MMAL is also seeking financial assistance from the Australian federal government.
