Two possible fuel system defects that have prompted a recall of BMW 7-series saloons in Germany will not lead to similar action in the UK, says BMW (GB) corporate communications Graham Biggs.

Dow Jones yesterday said that a potential throttle valve defect may affect 8,000 7-series cars made between September and December 2001 while another potential problem with the electronic fuel pump may affect 15,000 cars produced between last October and April this year. Some cars may suffer from both defects.
“This is not a recall in the UK sense of the word,” Biggs told just-auto. “Recall over here means there is a safety issue which must be addressed urgently. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency are informed and official channels used.
“In Germany a recall is any kind of action where the customers are contacted directly. This may seem subtle, but it makes the world of difference.
“There are no safety issues in this case and we call such actions ‘service campaigns’. We will write to owners to let them know there might be an issue and to suggest that they might like to pop by their dealer at some point for a check, but [there is] no great urgency.”
