The A3 has been produced since 1999 at the Volkswagen/Audi plant in São José dos Pinhais city, Paraná state. But production never exceeded 12,000 units per year for sale in Brazil and other South American countries. Audi recently fully redesigned the German-built A3 and European sales begin shortly.

Volkswagen builds its Golf model in the same Brazilian plant as the Audi and is soon to start making the Project 249 compact car, that will be sold in Brazil from the end of this year.

Audi will decide by the end of 2004 if it will make another model in the São José dos Pinhais plant or will dedicate the factory solely to Volkswagen models.
